Realignment of the NHL Will Hurt Rangers

Format I liked but will never come back;early 1980s, first few years after the WHA merger; line everybody up 1 to 16, reseed after every round. Even though teams were designated in divisions, nobody cared, and standings were listed 1 through 21. For now anyway COVID also precludes everybody playing everybody . Screw the divisions or being blocked when 2or 3 great teams happen to be bunched in one division. As the NHL became more conscious of the expense of travel and having more televised games broadcast in your time zone, fell out of favor completely.

not much of a difference between Hurricanes/CBJ and Bruins/BUF. To be a playoff team during a regular format we'd have to best a couple of Pitt, Was, Phi, NYI, Car, CBJ anyways. Injuries and COVID will play a major factor in results with a short season, teams could lose core players which we hope doesn't happen. -- Lets hope everyone shows up to training camp in good health and fit.

I think it's going to be a blast. Hoping for a straight-forward playoff with top-4 in each division battling out for a semifinals spot. Simplicity is always good.

The East division is going to be tough, sure, but also really exciting. For me, the tiers are:

A: Boston, Washington

B: Philly, Pittsburgh

C: Rangers, Islanders

D: Buffalo, New Jersey

But there's every chance for the Rangers to pop into the top-4. Very exciting times ahead.

The ultimate playoff line up after 82 games often looks quite different from where things stood after 56, so there is more than the usual potential for surprises. There have been so many instances where teams were sluggish for the first 56 games and then hit stride. St. Louis was just the most recent example. Where one slump could be fatal, lesser teams have a better chance of sneaking in.
