Unvaccinated Players Could Miss Numerous Games, Face Stiff Fines This Season

Best guess is they're estimating the maximum games a player might miss based on being healthy for a full 82-game season but being unable to cross the border without quarantining each time. The teams would likely just instruct those players to stay home during those trips.

The NHL announced this season's Covid protocols earlier this month, though:

According to a report by Emily Kaplan of ESPN, the NHL informed its teams of the league's health and safety protocols for the 2021-22 season, which place severe restrictions on unvaccinated players. Many of the rules against unvaccinated players apply to road trips:

  • Players who aren't vaccinated will only be able to go to their team hotel, practice facility and arena while being unable to use areas such as bars, restaurants, gyms, and pools
  • Unvaccinated players will also be forbidden from having teammates or visitors in their hotel rooms
  • Under NHL rules, teams will be permitted to suspend unvaccinated players who are "unable to participate in club activities," whether due to a positive test for COVID-19 or due to an inability to travel because of government restrictions
  • Unvaccinated players lose one day's pay for each day they miss, though the league will make exceptions for players who do not take a vaccine due to religious or medical reasons

Stalock Expected to Miss Entire 21-22 Season After Developing Myocarditis After Testing Positive for COVID-19

Quote

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Alex Stalock is expected to miss the entire 2021-22 NHL season due to a heart condition he developed after contracting COVID-19 last season.

In March, Stalock revealed to The Athletic's Michael Russo that he was diagnosed with myocarditis after testing positive for COVID-19 in November of 2020. Stalock didn't play for the Oilers after signing with the team prior to the 2020-21 season, only getting a chance to serve as backup in May.

some ahl team may have him or there's always the echl.  Kudos to Lou for telling him to fuck off. Certainly his right to not take the shot, guess he's finding out it's the team's right to say sayonara as well.  Not sure he has any appeal either, his numbers in two seasons in Bridgeport are nearly invisible.

I get that some people are opposed to getting the vaccine but can you imagine all the work you would have to put in to finally get a crack at making it to the NHL and choosing to put yourself squarely behind the 8 ball because you don't want to get vaccinated?

It seems insane to me. I get that political identities have been interwoven here, but this seems like an incredibly stupid hill to die on. It's going to cost these guys serious money and time they'll never get back. How your political identity means more to you as a professional hockey player than actual hockey games is beyond me.

You spelled "make the right decision" wrong.

no shit but this kid isnt making big money. He's making $70k with his entire life ahead of him. It's his right. Leave it at that. Let's not drag politics into this.

When politics are the most important thing in your life, above making a living and common sense, that's not a good look.

When there's a mandate to do something that helps everybody, and you deny that, it's just not a good look. This is not the hill to die on regarding human rights... Especially when this guy probably supports pro-life. If I'm reading the room right....

What is the medical proof that his heart condition is directly from covid though? Or are we leaping here?

From a study, a small but not insignificant number of athletes developed myocarditis after having COVID-19.

Meaning  These cardiac magnetic resonance imaging findings provide important data on the prevalence of clinical and subclinical myocarditis in college athletes recovering from symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 infections.

Importance  Myocarditis is a leading cause of sudden death in competitive athletes. Myocardial inflammation is known to occur with SARS-CoV-2.

And if he was never diagnosed with it prior to having COVID with all of the health checks and physicals these professional athletes get, there's a very good chance it is in fact from COVID-19 after-effects.

Good stuff. Definitely needs more data though.

Yup. Very rare vaccine side effect, still rare but more common than vaccination long-term side effect of COVID-19 infection.

Either way, this is a case of someone putting their political identity over the safety of others and somehow, a career he's worked for his entire life to get.

Billions of COVID vaccines have been administered across the world. Of course there will be instances of some side effects happening but they are VERY rare and miniscule compared to the overall benefits.

The fact that these people are being so selfish that they arent taking something that is as safe as this, when they have ALL been vaccinated against a myriad of other diseases throughout their life is beyond rationale. People are so wrapped up in their political ideals that they will give up everything in some bullshit stance like this.

This Bode kid, seems like he wasnt gonna go anywhere anyway. Bertuzzi in Detroit on the other hand, is an important player for them and is hurting his team with his selfishness.

now just waiting on Dave for the non-political discussion.

Health and science aren't political, and given the nature of the thread topic, you have to expect there is going to be some overlap into that space. If that's not something you're comfortable with, you're free to opt out of participating in this thread.
