Let’s be honest. The best thing Callahan did for us was get traded for MSL.

It’s part whipping boy and part along the lines of “ the buck stops with x” on the ice. We are a tortured franchise to be honest because it had been so long without titles then to have a captain pot 3 after guaranteeing a win in the semis and deliver a cup. We just are in that mindset still that a leader HAS to be that way or else he doesn’t lead. It’s not true for the most part but it does have some merit to ot. I will say this. If by Christmas time Kreider hasn’t disappeared yet then all fingers point to him. He has stepped up in a leadership role more than I expected him to. I’m still weary of his hiatus but he does see, to “want it” a bit more this year in every way than in previous years.

I think the point of having him now is that realistically, how far away are we in terms of pieces? Pavelski fits every box. Clutch, good from the draw, puts up points when it matters, and is at an age where a lesser role is amazing for him. Think Brad Richards without asking him to play 20 minutes a night. On paper we are so close. Teams with a hell of a lot lesser players have achieved a lot more than us. id have no problem with a trade to obtain him assuming he would take less to stay after this year. Guy wants a cup. We want a cup. We have a Norris winner, a top young goalie, a top two way center, a Russian elite winger, a power forward , and a 1/2 draft pick. For fucks sake, how much more do we need before we say “guys it’s time.”

The biggest problem is that if you didn’t name one on day one, naming one on day 20 doesn’t really do too much. As this season progressed, I’d think Kreider deserves it most just by sheer will and performance. Problem is, we all are waiting for that hiatus that we all know will come. Ziby then? Well why wasn’t he captain already? That leaves us with Fox. Soft spoken, let’s his body of work be the talking. But there is just something kind of missing there. I’m not sure it’s exactly time for him. Grand scheme of things is that there will be that “ah ha” moment where we all know this is the captain. I’m not sure it’s happened yet.
