  1. I'm in the minority, but i like Trouba. He had a very mixed 1st year but i think the whole settling in with his better half wanting to be here and new environment was likely a bigger distraction than we will understand. I think there will be a day he lives up to this contract, likely after ADA moves on and he also gets more PP time.
  2. And those guys are going to also have the performance bonuses too so we don't know if they are actually more or less cost effective than Fast would be at 2m. Look, you can't have a roster filled with 20-22 year olds. At that age, as we've seen with some guys already, you cant define a role as much. They haven't been around long enough yet to see where or where they are not successful. A guy at 20 in his rookie season still thinks his college/juniors/minor pro/scout/agent or dad is right when telling him that he has all the ability to take over the league and "Show em what ya got" type attitude. You need some guys that are leaders, been there before, and know their role in this league. Fast was that guy. 2m was dirt cheap to keep that, especially considering he did so in NY which we all know sometimes turns players into different beings for some odd reason because of all the distractions you don't get in many other cities. Is it the end of the world? No. Is it a bit of mismanagement? Yes. Seems a bit like Gorton et al might have a bit of talent potential problem and that might come back to haunt us a bit if we aren't going to have the ability to pick up 1 or 2 of these role type pieces every team needs. Even if you aren't cup ready you still need guys like Fast so the young guys on the bench and in the locker room have that guy to learn from and watch a consummate pro craft his trade. This is the year teams are looking to clear cap. We had cap. If this was so much of a worry with bonuses, then a combo of two between Georgiev, ADA, and Strome should have been gone and guys like Fast, and a 2/3c with a team friendly deal like a Kerfoot, Wennberg,Sundqvist, Donato, or someone like that should have been brought in to give a stable, cheaper cap hit you can live with and slide up and down hoping for either some chesmitry with Panarin or for a Chytil to develop into a 2c. Then we still had enough to address 1 or 2 pieces in the 4th line and go from there since we are still a ways away from being contenders. These are the important years though. Most contenders usually have some savvy moves 1 or 2 seasons prior that players always say "things really changed when we did x,y, or z. That really helped solidify....."
  3. I’m sure the rest of the NHL won’t take any notice, but has it ever been more clear that Hall has one goal and one goal only? A one year deal in Siberia basically to wait and hope another team he’d rather play for can free up money to pay him even more. Shrewd decision if all you’re about is dollars and not ever winning.
  4. I’d say let’s get Kerfoot now but vesey and Kerfoot were linemates in Harvard so they probably 2ant that connect
  5. I thought Jones did well today. Giants really didn’t play too bad. There’s just a lot of growing pains
  6. That Dak injury was horrific. My god.
  7. The thing though is that I can’t really see how a 2m contract specifically would break the bank either way 3 years from now. Regardless of when we would be up against the cap, a 2m salary isn’t that far off from a realistic vet contract. Fast wouldn’t have been the problem. It would have been another player that priced himself out of our roster. Fast at 2m is the type of contract that is so cheap, it allows more wiggle room elsewhere in the future. If is this bad, I’d almost rather them have still traded Georgiev and had Kinkaid backup at under 1m so we could have kept a pretty valuable cheap role player
  8. Very tight. Not sure about zero. Considering how dirt cheap Fast was willing to accept, I think you had to make that deal and look to sacrifice elsewhere. There are a couple of teams that have been taking some players. I feel like the right thing to do would have been to move Smith since he is gone after next year regardless. I’m sure they tried before but once FA hit it seemed like teams started taking on salaries a bit more. Fast is the kind of guy at that price point that is exactly the bargain contract that every good team needs so they can fill a hole and spend elsewhere more. He even signed for term too.
  9. It’s just that the full article states part of this is that the existence of a Gauthier and Barron possibly making the team made it harder to keep Fast. These “mega” bonuses for next season would be rolled into the following seasons cap no? If we were so lucky that every guy hits a crazy max bonus we have to trade someone then next summer. Fast signed 2m per with no clauses. I’m not sure who met what bonus this past season. I’m pretty sure Shesh and Kakko didn’t met any max bonus.
  10. Not to nitpick your point but Tikkanen had over 50 points the year we won the cup. He would have been like 4th or so on our team lol
  11. Well I don’t know if he likes it but this gives a bit more insight as to why he was saying we are nowhere close and playoffs aren’t a priority yet. Maybe he knew the strategy was to take a step back a bit.
  12. How many 28 year old Alternate captains that’ll cost you only 2m, can slot up and down the lineup, and play in most situations do you think there are out there?
  13. This is a joke right? That?s a bargain for him and he wore an A here. Wtf are we doing?
  14. 76 games the year before and he still was on the pk for a good chunk. Look, we can spin tires all day I guess and we aren't going to agree. I think this signing was a Staal repalcement and I think he will be used for a lot more than 12m per game sheltered. It is what it is. We can just see if and when the season ever starts.
  15. and 40 of the Penguins games last year JJ played 2m+ of pk time and 48 the year before. If you compare that to Staal, last year Staal had 36 games of 2m+ SH time. 52 the year before. They are nearly identical. I just dont see how they didn't sign JJ and say "we have our Staal replacement" when, although very different players, play the same position, same pairing, and under Martin, JJ previously trusted to play more than just a sheltered 7th d role. Yes Quinn makes the decisions, but Martin was in charge of the PK in Pitt. I doubt he would all of a sudden change his stance on the guy when he likely lobbied for JJ in the first place.
  16. split the difference and say 17. Still too much for a dumpster fire. I can overlook Kakko's analytics because of age, new ice surface, adjustments to a new game ,etc. I cant look past a 33 year old that likely no one else wanted anyway.
  17. I think Sanchez is gone, hopefully Boone along with him. They are stuck with Stanton probably. Tanaka probably gone, Hicks tradeable. It's time to just go for a little less swinging for the 3 run home run and play actual baseball. They also have a terribly right handed lineup. Having said that, ive watched 5 minutes of baseball this year so I'm just going on what i've noticed for the last few years. This year was difficult to watch with the ridiculous new rules and quite frankly, protesting aspect I could do without.
  18. I find it hard pressed to think many teams are going to sign him to anything but a 2 way contract. I think he's 23, so if its a 2 way contract, I don't see what the harm would have been. We signed a whole bunch of nobodys and at the least, Bracco also would be good exposure to the expansion draft. Of course this depends on if he would even want to come here, but being from LI, there's a decent chance.
  19. Well, if we make a pretty direct comparison since you assume he's 3rd pairing, he's basically taking the place of Marc Staal. He played nearly 18 minutes per game, which is probably what JJ plays. That's..........problematic.
  20. Do you honestly think though that they are bringing in another veteran 6/7 D this offseason? And we are putting this on the GM. No the sky isn?t falling but the years during a rebuild get hampered more by signings like this rather than help. Saying why the hell would we sign the worst NHL defenseman is on Gorton for sure. Doesn?t mean it?s dismantling what has been done, but just really is a move that misses the mark in every way.
