Kreider hasn’t been questionable. He’s always been a 20+ goal guy and 40-50 point guy his whole career and a bit of a unicorn with his size, speed, and leadership. Keeping him was a no brained especially if the possible returns weren’t what we would have wanted. 6.5m is not that bad and 4+ years from now if he is on the decline, his cap hit won’t be that bad considering the cap will have gone up by then ( it’s gone up at least 2m every year recently). The league also is up for a new tv deal I believe after next year which probably will help the cap jump up a bit more significantly.

confirmed: Rangers Re-Sign Chris Kreider to 7-Year/$45.5 M Extension; $6.5M AAV

At some point they had to de ide if the pieces they have are part of a serious cup run. Kreider has already proven he is. I think it's a great retention. -

This is still a very good retention. Kreids is gonna lift a cup here. -

I?m happy he?s staying. Cap goes up every year. 7 years ago it was 60m or so. 6.5m won?t be a huge amount 5 years from now. It?ll be fine. -
Such a mistake if we are sellers. I can see losing a guy or two like Skjei and one of our horrid contracts but this group needs to stay here, Reup contract wise, and continue the good progress until next year and year after to compete for a cup. There are some awesome pieces already here and blossoming other ones.

[friedman] Rangers Are Thinking "More and More" About Keeping Kreider
Keirik replied to Phil's topic in New York Rangers
I’m not so sure they have to eat too much salary. They are taking back 3.3m in Grub so that basically is like the salary retention. They do have some offseason decisions but they have about 21m in cap space this offseason. Obviously that would be 5m less with Hank coming in and Grub going our way -

You know, I was thinking about this earlier. I wonder if instead of offering a guy like Henrik to the Avs, why not try and sell them on trading Hank and Georgiev together? Take back Grubauer. They get one playoff goalie and another rfa to use as a chip themselves or retain after the season for the future. We only bring back 3.3m. Free up 5m. Makes it a bit easier this offseason especially if we move Smith -

That’s a pretty good assessment. If he were to agree to 6.5x6 I’d be all over it. At 7 I’m still interested but something has to concede here. Personally I don’t see him turning into a 15 goal guy 4 years from now. I do think though letting him walk regresses us severely for a year or two at a time where I think we have turned a corner. I really wish this wasn’t happening. -

Agreed, it’s not like we are talking about Strome -
Title should read life after we make a big mistake. Can fit in so many ways lol

I don’t know. That’s such a forced skewed narrative. Obviously with kreider they made it to the finals. With Ziby they made it to the 2nd round then blew the team up the following year. They aren’t one of the “worst” teams because of those three. They are because they blew the team up including coach and tore it all down. That’s a product of circumstance , not a measure of the player.

I do too but I doubt they do it this year. Unless this is so tighlipped that nothing gets out. Seems unlikely. -
Even if we made the playoffs and didn't go too far, that experience is huge
-
I say fuck it. Keep everyone. Show the team where they believe they are and ride it for as long as it goes. Okay, I get it. Losing the chance to get an asset but still. The experience they get is irreplaceable and a young team like this learns from management confidence. Put the ball in guys like Kreider's court by saying we want you but please remember we kept you in good faith when negotiating. It's rare but there are a few guys NHL wise that have left a bit of money on the table to help the team. Kreider is "heady" and he might see the big picture here. It's just going to mean the end of a few other guys forcefully or not. It's still what, is best for the club though.

Yeah, I know we have disagreed in the past in terms of Henrik but I think it’s getting clearer and clearer. Hank has some in the tank. He’s got something stil to give but barring injury it just won’t be here and I’d rather there be an amicable resolution that helps out both sides. In an ideal world? Rangers go on some crazy run, get very deep in the playoffs and Henrik gets one last spotlight with a minor injury to Shesh and Hank shines, Rangers win a cup and he retires. If that happens beers on me lol -

Honestly, it would very difficult but the only way I’d really agree to trading Kreids at this point is if they take either Henrik too, or both Staal and Smith, then resign kreider this offseason. Just dreamin I guess -
