RichieNextel305
Quote So, when does the talk begin to kick in about Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, each with two years remaining on contracts with matching cap hits of $10.5 million per and no-move clauses, becoming available at the deadline in a trade out of Chicago? https://nypost.com/2021/10/23/mike-bossy-will-face-cancer-with-a-champions-fight/ In that article, Brooksie writes about if and when Chicago may start a full fledged rebuild. And in another article for tomorrow, he’s writes the following… Quote It is a long season. The Rangers are going to need to sprinkle in a few more goals along the way. They may need to find someone who can do that for them. The marathon has a way of exposing the truth about a team. There are miles and miles to go. https://nypost.com/2021/10/22/new-look-rangers-displaying-pack-mentality/ It’s not that difficult to see a correlation there. Just reading the Tarasenko thread gives the answers to this: yes, the Rangers can use help. Obviously, Chicago would need to retain some salary. Both Toews and Kane carry heavy cap hits and literally no team would be able to absorb the full hit. The Rangers have the prospect capital, the need and if Chicago retains some, the space, to facilitate a trade. You would have to imagine this would be a tough breakup given their stature and status there as legends. But I’d also imagine they would be given the opportunity by Chicago to, I wouldn’t say pick the destination of choice, but be dealt somewhere they would wanna go. And I feel that another Original 6, big city franchise that can win, along with the opportunity to pair back up with Panarin, would be enticing for Kane. And the opportunity to lead another Original Six franchise to a championship would be enticing for Toews. These are the type of “finishing touch” moves we should be looking at. Keirik
Yeah, hard no. This isn’t video game hockey. I think we have around 19m cap space next year before reuppibg Fox, Kakko, Blais, Georgiev, finding a 2c assuming Strome goes bye bye. Also I believe ALF has perform bonuses no? Gauthier? Mckegg? Rooney? Last three aren’t vital to keep but you still need roster guys. Cap retention is max at 50%? I don’t see it as a possibility unless Troubas wife gets transferred to Chicago and if she does, I’d rather pay Fox what he’s worth and not fuck around. 2
RichieNextel305
Kane’s deal expires after next season. Similar to Tarasenko, if Chicago would retain salary (which they most certainly would in virtually any scenario that involves moving him), this would not be a long term issue for the Rangers. Toews is exactly the kind of player this team needs in the room and in that 3rd line role. Just not sure we can afford him, even at 50%.
Keirik
If you trade for Toews, it has to be at 2c because you certainly can’t bring back Strome and you assume they would look for Chytil + 2 pieces I’d guess if being asked to retain 50% Edited October 24, 2021 by Keirik

Like, can they do Krav to ARI, Chytil+ to CHI, each eating 50%, and Toews to NYR? Doesn't seem that difficult.

RichieNextel305
At some point, the eye has to be on today and not tomorrow. We can’t waste Panarin at his best at his cap hit, and Zibanejad at his best at his cap hit, because we’re overly focused on the future instead of the present. The Rangers possess a winger who is an Art Ross favorite, a center who is a Rocket Richard contender, a defenseman coming off a Norris Trophy winning season, a goaltender who appears to be coming into his own, plus a variety of other young talented pieces littered throughout. To flatly call them a team that isn’t contending is an flat out lie; this team is a contender, and it’s time we get used to saying that. The rebuild has to come to an end at some point, and it has. Now we develop and make our move. It’s not Stanley Cup or bust by any means. But the Rangers should be focused on getting into the dance, because all you need to do is get in and from there, anything can happen when you have the type of talent they do. 3

Yeah but that's expensive and you'd obviously need to add more going to Chicago, and that's before considering retention. It's going to be Chytil, Robertson, 1st for Toews. Upgrade that to Schneider and add a pick for retention.
josh
Oh shit his base salary is 2.9m. Arizona should be all over that retention deal.
Sod16
Whether or not we are a "contender," we are too early in our contender cycle to be trading for big time players who we can only keep this year and next. Gorton probably wants to ink Fox now rather than do bridge deals, which would probably preclude having this type of player even for next year. If we had a bunch of stars in their early thirties and we were looking at a last chance to win with this group, this type of deal might make more sense. Besides, as much as I think it makes some sense, Toews is a shell of himself right now after whatever issues that kept him out last year. We really don’t need to trade a ton just to get some extra leadership. If we are just looking for that, we could probably look at Getzlaf for cheaper on an expiring contract closer to the deadline if we are in a solidified playoff position ready to make a run. No? Kane would be way too expensive. He’s not really on decline yet.
