Barlclay Is Good-Row

The big boys keep rolling along. And now you have to count Barclay Goodrow among the big boys.

Goodrow simply works best on the second line with Artemi Panarin and Strome. It’s a surprise to anyone who’s watched Goodrow’s grinding style over the years and it’s certainly not why he was brought to New York, but he’s finding the right spots to be with these two playmakers and it’s working. A guy who never sniffed double-digits in goals is on an 18-goal pace. Might as well go with it.

On pace for a career-high in goals (18) and points (38). A staple on the league's 8th best PK (83%) — up from tenth the previous season.

Yeah, we know, six years. 3.6. We get it. And in years five and six, things may not look so hot. That's generally true of all free agents who sign unrestricted deals, because I think most of us understand how aging curves work, but the atmosphere of fear and loathing that's surrounded his signing is unwarranted. He's worth it until he isn't.

He's been as expected, with a slightly better p/pg than I was hoping for. Leadership, "grit", intensity, PK, faceoffs and can play up and down the lineup. Exactly what we needed before the season and he brings it.

Ideally he should be playing bottom 6, but again - I don't care who's playing with Panarin - Strome as long as its working. I would also think having a guy like Goodrow on that line in the playoffs will be huge.

He's still 28 y/old. He's signed to 34. I don't see any reason why he can't keep going like this untill 34, but trading the last couple years of his contract will not be an issue at all if needed.

I was honestly never concerned about the term or the cap hit. Neither we’re back breaking considering we needed to get a player like this and he was like a Swiss Army knife of things we needed: experience, grinder, winner, leader in the locker room. The point totals and goals are an added bonus at this point, but all in all, I agree. He’s fit in very nicely here so far.

I was more along the lines of "this is a guy we bring in for the playoffs".  He's given us more than I bargained for, for sure.  I like Goodrow's game, and I think he'd  be even better come playoff time.

I like hearing the phrase, "Career high"...especially at the halfway point of the season!!!  Nice job Drury!!  this one's a good one!!

My take at the time of the trade was "Okay, who's fucking giving this dude 6 years and term?"

Once the reality that the answer to that question was apparently "lots of teams" set in, I went more toward "okay, look, this is fine if and only if you think he's got more to give - can be the 3c, can PK, can get some greasy goals".

And you know what? He clearly did. He's awesome on the PK, he's getting greasy goals, he's been solid enough as the stalwart on the third line, he's swung up the lineup (kudos to @rmc51 for actually calling the Panarin-Strome-Goodrow line on trade day) - he's been worth every penny.

Receipts here. Get your receipts here.

Also serving crow.

Yeah man, we were on board with him from day 1, G!  I just had a good feeling about Goodrow.  He came over exactly as billed....and then-some!!

I still think we're going to see even more value from him down the stretch and especially in the playoffs.

He’s been awesome. He’s slightly overpaid but it’s not like he’s 2m overpaid. He’s just overpaid because of the years as @Phil said.

Slotted anywhere and has done well. Has played wing and center here and there and has done well. Pk, takes regular shifts, oit there in important minutes, leadership, etc.

You know who he sort of reminds me of in terms of role here? Brian Boyle in his best years here.  Not nearly as much of a hitter but plays a similar role as Boyle did slotting up and down and providing more offense than really expected while doing a lot of the little things.

Yeah, $4M was always my point of no return. Even at $3.6, it's never going to be comfortable, because of who he is, and what his limitations are, but I'm also firmly in the camp with all long-term deals that you cross the bridge when you get to it. It's such a self-fulfilling prophecy with fans who are always concerned with year seven instead of year one. The point is to win. If he helps you do that, who cares?

I think this is one of the times where the eye test plays better than the fancy stats. His fancy stats this season are dreadful, even despite his D-zone starts. But he's making it work, and helped by a relatively high PDO of 103.8%. I've loved his versatility and that he can play in any situation and with any linemates.

That's not relative, it's high. His analytics are always going to be trash. He has very little offensive talent and is most often used in a checking role. That's already, even on good teams, going to make for a breakeven player. On a bad 5v5 team, it's going to look awful.

TwoMinsForNothing died for this.

Just looked through that thread to see what my reaction was.

If it’s in the 3.6m aav I’m fine with it. If it’s overpayment, it’s by a few hundred thousand, not millions so I’m fine. I still hope they get one more tough body and or faceoff specialist like a Glendening. Personally I think Blackwell is good as gone to Seattle and I’m okay with that. He was a nice find but he won’t be here past next year regardless when his contract is up. I’m looking for guys to be here long term and solidify our future. Goodrow is here to stay and I’m A ok

btw, we started talking about Gourde in that thread too lol

The same goes for Rooney. They're both fantastic defensive players who are among the best in applying pressure and clamping down lanes. There's a reason they're nearly impenetrable when they're out there together. If only they could get a third member to make that a full time unit.

Man just up and disappeared when Goodrow started doing well, and the team played well under Gallant.

Nah, he was bullied.

Because when you post shit that's wrong, and then people tell you that it's wrong, that's bullying by certain people's standards.

How that contract will age — Goodrow will be 34 when it expires in 2027 — or whether it's wise to allocate over $3.6 million per season to a bottom-six grinder is to be determined. But the immediate impact from adding the two-time champion has been indisputably positive.

"He's lived up to every expectation," Rangers center Mika Zibanejad said last week. "To get to know him as a guy, too, he’s very humble and just really does everything for the team. You can tell the way he plays – sometimes on the wing and sometimes at center – it doesn't matter what line he plays on. He does his job, and I think he's just an all-around unbelievable pro. You can tell, and I think that guys notice that."

Goodrow's goals aren't the prettiest, but he's provided a savvy, physical presence around the net and along the boards, showing a knack for tips, screens and redirections. The Rangers are outscoring opponents by 57.74% margin with him on the ice at even strength, which ranks second among forwards who have played at least 20 games, according to Evolving Hockey. He's also been clutch, including netting the tying goal with 5:45 remaining in last week's 3-2 shootout win against the Los Angeles Kings.

But his role on defense and the penalty kill is what the Rangers value most. He leads all skaters with over 108 minutes logged on a PK that ranks eighth in the league with an 83% success rate.

That's made him a favorite for head coach Gerard Gallant.

"Goodrow has been outstanding," he said. "From day one, he’s been great for us."

I've really grown to love Goodrow as he's gotten more comfortable throughout the season. He knows how to bring the right energy to the game and his defensive contributions often cover for his teammates. He's a more expensive Jesper Fast which kind of sucks, but I'm glad he's here because you need a player like him. I just wish the Rangers never lost Fast to begin with. Would be nice to have both or just Fast for nearly 1/3 less.
