The problem with giving up the two picks is that either of them would have been good bait for dumping a much bigger cap number in a season or two.

Yup. This was easily the better approach than a buyout. You can’t pay to get rid of a dead cap hit once it’s on the books. Good move Drury! I feel like Gorton would have executed the buyout instead.

No way Trouba goes as a cap dump if he goes. He might save us cap, but he's not a cap dump player. Nope. There will be teams who will pay to have him on their team regardless of cap hit.

Thought this would happen before they signed a C. With him off the books they could have entertained Kadri.

Yup. They'll probably have to work around the margins some, but they're not going to struggle to find a partner there. Most contenders will actively want him.

8M is a big hit.  Summer of '24 if the Rangers want anything back for Trouba they're going to have to retain some of that hit.  If they want to dump the hit entirely they're going to have to pay to do it.  Two years at 8M means Trouba better be the last piece of the puzzle for some contender and he really isn't that.

Trouba's value in a trade wouldn't be to a contender, it would be a team on the cusp in the need of leadership and sandpaper. He's only due $6M per season in actual salary in the final two years of his deal. A team could fit him in if they wanted to.
