NYR have taken another step forward. When can you recall us ever getting 40 SOGs on opening night. We usually play slow and sloppy but not tonight. We’re on to something. LGR!!

Maybe in 2019 against the Jets had more, Rangers won 6-4…

Game was not remotely close and we were down a forward the entire time. Easily could have won 6-1 and Igor had to do basically nothing.

obviously mika was ridiculous but the whole team looks dangerous. It’s hard to call out anyone else’s performance tho bc Mika was that good.

Tell 'em bout ya boy @Drew a Penalty

But seriously, I was sitting behind the Rangers goal tonight and just laser focused on Jones whenever he was on the ice — he has unreal composure for a rookie. I don't want to draw Fox comparisons, but I would draw comparison to his ability to wow in the way Fox did as a rookie. He makes little plays or second efforts that lesser players just don't. He doesn't chase too hard on plays, his second efforts on defensive plays are deliberate.

For a smaller player he's so good at knowing when to engage physically when he doesn't have a stick play. I'd say that he was even more physical than Schneider tonight. Anytime the play got close to the boards, Jones was there ready to engage and he was often coming away with the puck. The only player that really gave Jones a hard time was Maroon and even he took great effort to get away from Jones. Never mind what he adds offensively. This kid is legit.

The team was awesome tonight. Kakko, Miller and Lafreniere look like they're all ready to take a step forward. Chytil was good too.

Welcome back to the 2022-2023 season, folks!!!

A solid game by our beloved Boys in Blue.  Just a stellar 60 minute effort, that rewarded us with our first "W" of the season.

....And here are the Top 10 nominees for our first "Ozzy’s Quote of the GDT" of the season, sponsored by:  Emily Kaplan, who is as @josh   put it best: "The human cure for insomnia"!

"Coach Gallant, how does it feel to open up the season on home ice against the back to back Stanley Cup Champions?"

"Well Emily, the Avalanche have not won back to back Cups, and we're not playing them so I don't understand your question."

After that interview I’m convinced that kakko also has a learning disability on top of celiac disease and diabetes.

Fuck I wasn’t looking.

i missed the last 2 goals.

I’ll just go sit in the other room for the rest of the game

It is truly amazing how shitty some of those ESPN broadcasts can be!  That fucking camera that rotates around on the power play should be banned from existence!

…and the winning quote for tonight’s GDT goes to:  Crazy Pete @siddious, who correctly identified Kakko's afflictions during his interview!

Holy shit!!  We looked fabulous tonight!!!

Gonna be really hard to sleep with this stiffy in my shorts after watching that game!!!

Flawless effort.  Every guy looked energized.  (Let's face it, it certainly helped that Bolts were listless.

There's Zib the good player and Zib the dominant force.  Tonight was the latter.

Agree with comments on Jones; nifty player and good compliment to the new No. 4.

Given that Sheshty got a little spooked by the fans in Pittsburgh, I rather not have the counter chants when the Bolts are beating us in TB at some point.

Ozzy's right about those ESPN angles on PP.

I don't know what kind of season we will have, but we will always remember that we had a great start.  May be the best first game I can recall.

The D looked stellar. Our weak points some how look like strong points.

D stand outs:

Miller looked poised and his reach is INSANE. Zac Jones fit seamlessly into the mix; kid earned his spot by keeping his head down and waiting his opportunity. Welcome to Broadway Jonesy!!!

O stand outs:

Zibby obviously. Kakko looks strong as hell with a chip on his shoulder. Vesey played a SOLID game and had a few nice forechecking plays and defensive plays. Laffy looks ready for the larger role and looked solid on Panarins RW; hoping that experiment continues. DAMN, I could say something good about each one of em. Goodrow almost made the S-list but redeemed himself.

Coach Gallant got this team up and ready. That room must be something special. Keep the train rolling!!!!

It looks like they never want to feel the pain of last year's ECF ever again. They just look like they have something to prove and have a chip on their shoulder. They are a together group who believes in each other, and have totally bought in on Gallant. Who knows what happens this year, but the sky is the limit for this group.

I know it's easy to sit back and say you gotta pump the brakes here because we have 81 of these to go, but there are some VERY telling signs in this:

  • I counted maybe 5 high danger chances at 5V5...
  • Gallant in his presser after the game was actually talking about how they limited HDC's and kept things to the outside....(Wait...That was planned???) LOL
  • Mika is just an animal
  • Kreider could've had 2 goals easily
  • Vasilesky kept that game close.  That game could've easily been 5-1- or 6-1 with a regular human goalie in there.
  • Kakko was reminding me of Jagr, the way he was carrying the puck around
  • Jones looked good
  • Schneider looked good

Fuck it, they all looked great in this one!  Now the goal is CONSISTENCY.

It's one game, and a great foundation.  Play with a purpose, like last night and this is going to be a run for history......that, and possibly a new liver!!  LOL

We're back, boys!!!  ...and we're looking like we grew......a LOT!!!!

Going back to last season with Schneider and even Miller starting to grow and you throw Jones into the mix, I'm very impressed by the composure of all our young defensemen. Jones is still very green and he'll make his fair share of mistakes, but he already looks so poised.

The issue even going back to last year was never the talent on the blue line (except Nemeth), they are all individually very skilled hockey players. The issue is that skilled group of hockey players does not execute on defense commensurate with their skill level.

It'sliterally the only area of the team where they punch below their weight.

That plays a lot into their ineptitude at 5v5, and if they fix that, sky's the limit.

It's kinda crazy that Trouba is our oldest D-man at 28. Lindgren is the 2nd oldest and he's 24 lol.

I would agree with that.

I also think a lot of it is caused by youthful inexperience and hopefully a lot of it just goes away

Coaches have their part in that too though.
There are definitely things that can be fixed there.

 💯

And frankly, I think they're so bad on defense for the same reason they're so bad on face offs... Whatever they are doing with the wingers isn't working. Wingers don't help on draws, defensively they can never get out of the zone, wingers aren't making themselves available.

Please tell me that wasnt an actual question to GG from Emily Kaplan last night?  I cant tell if this is a joke or not and that just shows how much proof ESPN sucks.

Yes

What I’ll say to that though is this… I think these are maybe the smaller, more nuanced adjustments a coach, with a young and inexperienced team, makes after his team has grown some. So maybe that’s in part why we haven’t seen this before.

But they need to take a step forward now
