I think it did matter though in that you had to be an outstanding righthanded player to make that roster at any position except for goalie.  The defensemen were not usually in the wheel but they were all lefthanded also, maybe due to occasionally having to join the party on odd man rushes.

 

Those teams were spectacular entertainment though.  Like the Globetrotters on ice for many years.

 

I went to see them in '75 when the Soviets were in town for a bunch of different performances in a cultural exchange.  They were just slightly less entertaining than the ice-skating bears.
