2024 Off-season Thread: Burn in Effigy

Yeah I get it. I think stretching the lineup is important, so this works.

Put it this way… last season, due to the injury to Chytil, the coaches were forced into lines/deployment that they didn’t necessarily want or think was their best option. Obviously it happened early in so we have no real idea as to how it would have worked through a full season.

And then the option they had of Panarin-Tro-Laf ended up working out ASTONISHINGLY WELL!

I can’t stress that enough. They were literally the best line in hockey last year.
I don’t think any expected that.

But… the instincts to play the lines differently with Chytil playing with Panarin and LaFreniere was their inclination.
Meaning they felt and knew that that was the way to go.

You might not get the level of production you got with Trochek over Chytil.
But I still think you get very good production.

And the better part is you get a potentially better and fuller deployment and lines that make more sense who can all produce.
They needed more depth scoring last year.

Big drop off from their top 6 scorers to their 7th.

LaFreniere just below 60 points. No one else at even 35.

Need some guys in the 40-50 point range.

Totally agree. You want to be better at 5v5 over the course of more of the game than the 20 minutes the Bakery line was out.

Yeah.

They got overall slightly minus hockey from line 4 last year, and basically neutral hockey from line 3.
That’s absolutely fine from line 4… especially with Goodrow playing with a broken jaw for what…2+ months?

But you can’t get only neutral play from your 3rd line.
Got to get plus hockey from them.
All year long, in whichever version of that line you got, excluding with Bonino up there, they gave you good solid defensive play.

But they gave you very little offense and got caved in too often due to the lack of anyone on that line really being able to drive play.
I think if you put Tro in the middle of that line you see more offense with him in between Kakko and year 2 Cuylle.

There’s nothing to talk about. Drury fucked up the offseason. It is what it is. Can we just fast forward to next summer?

We can always talk about Pete and how he knows nothing about hockey. We can discuss this in our chat for BSBH peasants.

Don't disrespect our lord and savior of the top line, Reilly Smith.

Yea I swear last summer was longer but felt like it went by quicker than this.

Last summer was excruciating because of their awful postseason collapse. This feels just as long, but at least they had a great run, and it's a bit more mellow here than it was in the previous offseason. lol

Less ledge walking for sure but equally as many questions I’d say.

Yes?

Yes.

And let's just completely ignore how useless he is the other 190 ft of ice that the game is played on.

This is unfair in some ways.  Kreider gets a lot of breakaways, which wind up as 6 foot goals but aren't the same as the goals where he camps the crease.

He's limited in some ways but it's not like he doesn't create opportunities or have value in other situations.  Among other things the PK is one of the strongest in the NHL when he's on the ice.

He used to get a lot of breakaways.

He doesn't create opportunities either. Almost every goal he scores is because someone else created an opportunity for him. Third period of the Carolina game was the first time in his career he actually took over an exerted his will on a game. The first time. And the last time.

My issue with him has nothing to do with his goal scoring. But there's more to the game of hockey than goal scoring and he does nothing in any other area of the ice. He sets up in front of the net and doesn't move. He's useless on the cycle. He's useless in transition and the neutral zone.

You want to know why Panarin's Line was the best five on five line in the league last year? Because All three players on that line can transport the puck and gain the zone as well as participate in the offense in zone.

You want to know why Mika didn't put up his typical numbers? Because he's the only one on the line doing anything. It's incredibly hard to ask one player to transport the puck from the defensive zone to the offensive zone, set up his linemates, and score goals, as both of his wingers are passengers.

Don't forget that more than half those goals are on the PP.  Those don't count because only 5v5 points matter.  Unless they're theoretical points Laf would score.  At least thays how Panarin and Zib get judged.

Circumstances did not change on line 1-a last season.  The reason Mika's numbers are in decline is because he is overly reliant on the 1 timer from the right of the crease and he's not timing or shooting that particularly well any more.

He's also over 30 now and some guys adjust well to the transition (Kreider) and others don't.

It won't happen for completely logical reasons but Laf should be the RW on line 1 next season.  The Rangers should see if he can take a load off of Zib.  he already interacts well with Kreider and he's exactly the kind of player you want with the two of them because he's capable of taking or outleting on the breakaway and that's a big part of Kreider and Zib's game.

Circumstances did change. The right wing was different, and CK does less and less every year. You also have no idea how teams were approaching him last season as he scored 39 goals the year before. And maybe he just had a down year?

But the heavy lifting he has to do on his own was well documented.

This is nuts though.  Kreider is performing above his mid-prime average at this point in his early 30's and he's done so for 3 years in a row.

How do teams prepare for him?  Probably with great care as he is one of the real threats at even strength, on the PP and also the PK.  Losing track of Kreider is a quick way to make your goalie sad.

CK still has a centerman who goes out of his way to get him the puck, and it's tips and deflections all day on the power play.

I don't understand why you're trying to compare production. Nobody's complaining about CK's production. It's everywhere else on the ice that he's lacking.

As a veteran of the low production Rangers of the last window I revere Kreider's actual production at this point.  How many other 32 year old players are averaging more PPG than their cap figure would expect?

The Rangers got good again in a hurry when he stepped up with a career year in 21-22 and he's been part of the success both seasons after also.

The lack of grind is annoying but he's the polar opposite of Kakko in that regard.  Productive even when it doesn't look like he's trying particularly hard.
